Easy to manage and fun to use, Mobile STEM Labs cut across grade level and content strand with robust, reusable materials. The Engineering Pathways Mobile STEM Lab (the companion to the entry-level ROK Blocks Lab) supports a comprehensive 4–8 grade applied engineering curriculum. Each Lab serves 4 students and labs can be stacked on rolling bases to save space and make sharing resources between classrooms easy.

- This Lab includes two robotics platforms; the entry level Maker ROK Bot, and the fully Arduino compatible ROKduino SmartBlock with an array of sensors. Robotics curriculum guides students from motorizing basics to creating interactive environments, where multiple machines interact with each other autonomously.

Want to teach coding and robotics? Meet ROKduino!
At the heart of the Engineering Pathways Lab is ROKduino, an Arduino SmartBlock that makes learning to program easy and fun. ROKduino is fully programmable robotics controller with eight sensor inputs and four motor/power outputs. Additionally, the ROKduino can transmit commands to remote control Maker ROK-Bot robots! Students are introduced to fully programmable robotic environments through carefully phased experiences:
- Introduction to sensors (proximity, light, angle, bump, light gate, and color).
- Introduction to programming.
- Introduction to autonomous, inter-machine interactions.
Every robotics lesson comes with comprehensive step-by-step video tutorials, student workbooks, and sample programs (sketches).
Rokenbok’s programming curriculum starts with the basics and slowly builds in complexity. Students begin with an introduction to sensors, then learn to program, and finally learn how to create autonomous systems. With a huge arsenal of engineering components, motors, and sensors at their disposal, students learn to prototype and design with open-ended creativity. It is a deeply engaging and fun path to learning about computer science and building functional robots. **Compatible with macOS and Windows
Add a 3D Printer and Teach Systems of Technology
The Engineering Pathways Lab includes the materials and curriculum to teach Computer Aided Design (CAD) and rapid prototyping using a 3D printer. Students design and print new Rokenbok building components! They start by downloading a digital file for an existing Rokenbok component, modifying that design in a CAD program, and then print their modified design on a 3D printer. They use these newly designed parts to complete Rokenbok design projects. Modifying and improving existing designs is a real-world engineering experience, one that engineers use constantly to produce new and improved products.
Rokenbok PK-8 STEM Education Program
In 2008, Rokenbok’s research team of educators and technologists began to explore how to help children (especially girls, children from low-income families, and minorities) with STEM learning. The goal was to discover and innovate to benefit a very large population of children nationally. Here is what the team learned:
- Start Early and Don’t Stop: The best time to help children with STEM is the moment they start school, and then every year in the primary grades.
- Support Teachers: If you want to help a large population of children, you must engage elementary teachers as STEM Mentors.
- Make Project-Based STEM Easy & Affordable: Schools need an easily managed and cost-effective PK-8 STEM pathway to high school programs.
The team went on to create a comprehensive program and in 2015 established a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to pursue its mission, “To help all school-age children prepare for a lifetime of learning about science and technology.” Rokenbok Education is curriculum, professional learning experiences, and carefully organized reusable engineering materials. Together, these three program pillars create a comprehensive and very affordable PK-8 STEM education pathway.
