Expanded Lesson Teacher's Guide:
This reusable guide covers the years 100-1946 and the Omani Frankincense Trade. It is to be used in conjunction with the Omani Majmar (EDU 028). Clay majmars or incense burners have been used for thousands of years in the Sultanate of Oman, a country on the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Designed to burn frankincense, majmars represent the enduring value of the frankincense to Omani culture from the first millennium BCE to the present. Frankincense, an aromatic tree sap, is harvested in southern Oman and has been traded throughout the Middle East and across the Indian and Mediterranean Oceans for centuries. It is used for various medicinal and religious purposes, and remains to be a fixture in every Omani household as a sign of hospitality. Majmars vary in design from region to region and tell the story of the diverse craft heritage in Oman--this majmar represents a style typical of those produced in Dhofar, the southernmost region of Oman, known as "The Land of Frankincense"
