Expanded Lesson Teacher's Guide:
This reusable guide covers 558 BC- 323 BC and focuses on Alexander the Great. It to be used in conjunction with the Persia Empire Krater (EDU 014). A “krater” is a piece of earthenware pottery that was used to hold mixtures of water and wine. It is representative of the red-figure style because it is decorated with red figures surrounded by a black slip glaze. The color of the figures comes from the terra-cotta clay that remains underneath the unglazed portions of the piece. Bell-kraters were created by skilled artists and workers. The intricacy of their designs made them cherished items. The large elaborate kraters are usually decorated with images of mythological stories and poems. Epics like the Iliad and the Odyssey were illustrated, as well as stories about gods and heroes, athletic games, chariot races, and other social events. Examples of bell-kraters can be found in all the regions colonized by Greece around the Mediterranean.
