Expanded Lesson Teacher's Guide:
This reusable guide covers 200 BC- 900 AD and the Mayan Empire. It is to be used in conjunction with the Mayan Maize God Sculpture (EDU 020). The Maya ruled large parts of Mexico and Central America. This land had many resources which allowed their civilization to flourish. The land was fertile, which gave people more time to specialize in new skills. This allowed for cultural advancement in art, architecture, astronomy, math, and writing. The Maya believed in many gods, but the maize god was a central religious figure. The god’s story mirrors the annual planting and harvesting of corn. Like the plant, the maize god dies at harvest time and is reborn with each growing season. Every year the god’s death gave food to the people. He appears in many forms, but is always handsome and young. He is holding corn and decorated with jade beads, referring to the vital qualities of the green plant. Just as leaves of corn move in the wind, the maize god appears as a richly costumed dancer.
