Expanded Lesson Teacher's Guide:
This reusable guide covers 1800-1805 and such key people as Lewis & Clark and Thomas Jefferson. It is to be used in conjunction with the Louisiana Purchase Sugar Bowl (EDU 102). These types of bowls were made between 1789 and 1821 by Moravian potters. The Moravians were a group of religious people from Central Europe that settled in North Carolina. Pottery was one of the largest early industries carried on by the Moravian. The pottery of the time reflects the evolution of the early American landscape that melded and created distinctive objects that became part of our shared American culture. Moravian pottery is known for its colorful slip decoration and simple, solid forms. Sugar bowls had a cone-shaped lid and were rounded in the middle. Sugar was an expensive commodity, so people wanted to store it in a vessel that was both practical and highly decorative. Bold and colorful decorations are very characteristic of Moravian pottery. The distinctive colors are of Central European origin, with its alternating lines of light-yellow, green, and brown.
