Expanded Lesson Teacher's Guide:
This reusable guide covers 1200-1533 and such key people as Manco Capac, Pachacuti, Atahualpa, Francisco Pizarro, and Hernán Cortéz. It is to be used on conjunction with the Inca Empire Clay Figurine (EDU 008). The Inca ruled the territory along the west coast of South America. They were a highland warrior people that enjoyed a simple and functional way of life. Their cities were carefully planned to harmonize with the landscape. With no written records of history before the Spanish conquest, much of what we know about Inca civilization is learned by studying their ceramics and pottery. The two most common shapes of Inca fine wares are the plate and the aryballus. Inca designs were typically geometric and included repeating squares, cross-hatching, rows of triangles, and parallel lines. Small doll-like human effigies were also made to honor their gods. Art In History’s figurine is carrying an aryballus, a ceramic vessel used to store and carry liquids.
