Art in History Scrimshaw Project - The Wood Stork
Learn about Maritime Trade and Exploration. Art In History’s artifact replica is a sperm whale tooth from the time of great sea-faring activities such as whaling, exploration, and trade. Known artifacts from this era were made by whalers and/or sailors who were out at sea for extended periods of time. During sailors idle time, scrimshaw art was done utilizing crude sailing needles and other instruments. These tools were used to scratch, or etch, imagery into a sperm whale’s tooth.
The Everglades is the largest tract of wilderness east of the Rocky Mountains. It is located in South Florida and home to some of the most rare and endangered species in the United States.
The motif provided is the Spoonbill. The Spoonbill is found along the south Florida coast. In the 1800s their wings were made into fans. In the late 1800s the hat trade took a major toll on the Spoonbill. The establishment of the Everglades had a positive effect on their population.
