Expanded Lesson Teacher's Guide:
This reusable guide covers 1492-Present and incorperates the Acoma/Pueblo civilization. It is to be used in conjunction with the replica of an Acoma Pueblo water jar (EDU 112). Acoma Pueblo, or "Sky City" in New Mexico, is one of the oldest continuously occupied cities in North America. For over one-thousand years, the Acoma have been making pottery vessels for everyday life and rituals. Acoma pottery has been widely traded because of its high quality slate-like clay. It is considered to be the whitest, finest clay in all the Southwest. Designs include rainbows, geometrics, prehistoric motifs, and animals. The second most common design is the parrot. Potters hold a respected place in Pueblo society. The art of pottery was both integral and sacred to Acoma daily life. Pottery, with its ordinary household function, was also considered sacred because of its life-supporting uses. Water, a sacred element, transfers its power to the pottery vessel that holds it.
